Your Destination
Founded in 1536, this bustling metropolis reveals its European influence everywhere you look. Buenos Aires is a vibrant port city and the world’s leading Spanish language publishing hub. Travelers enjoy world-class museums and restaurants, exceptional architecture, and a rousing nightlife. With weather that is pleasantly mild almost year-round, Buenos Aires is ready for exploration by bike, public transportation, or on foot - one of the many reasons it has been voted “the number-one city to visit” in Latin America.
CIEE wants all our students to feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to succeed while studying abroad. Local CIEE staff have provided details about conditions and cultural attitudes that students with specific identities might encounter in Buenos Aires.
The Culture
EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES
Excursions and activities may include:
- Enjoy traditional Argentinian food, land earn tango and folk dances.
- Relax Buenos Aires-style at a festival, watch culture in motion with musical, dance, and theatre performances or experience the passion for soccer.
- Join a group that shares your interest – art, sports, culture, community – and connect with Argentine students. You can also join weekly café gatherings to compare school, idioms, and more with Argentine peers while you practice Spanish
- Take advantage of nearby sites of interest that offer a broader understanding of the country.
PROJECTS, VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES, OR INTERNSHIPS
Volunteer Opportunities: volunteer at a local nonprofit or non-governmental organization involved in social policy, human rights, community service, and public health matters, among others. Responsibilities may include teaching English to children of low socio-economic communities, helping people with disabilities, supporting the work of a city library, or coordinating local/regional conferences.
Students interested in one of the following Academic Projects must submit additional materials as part of their course selection:
- Internships: build new skills and intercultural competencies through an internship and become an active member of the Buenos Aires professional environment.
- Research: pursue a research project of your own design incorporating independent and local fieldwork.

Academics
The Buenos Aires Open Campus Block Program is designed to help students explore the dynamics of this vibrant and beautiful city and culture. Students have access to a range of complementary co-curricular, personal, and professional development activities. Throughout the program, students will explore connections between business, social development, and culture. The goals of the curriculum are to promote cultural self-awareness, scientific and cultural literacy, and the ability to bridge cultural gaps. Through interactive activities and exercises, students are encouraged to consider issues of culture, identity, values, beliefs, and assumptions. Ultimately, students develop discipline-specific competencies so they can effectively incorporate new experiences into their general understanding of the natural environment, as well as local human culture.
Students can choose from a variety of disciplines within seven different tracks: Art and Architecture; Business; Communications, Journalism, and New Media; Global and Community Health; International Relations and Political Science; Language, Literature, and Culture; or STEM and Society in English. Courses are mostly taught in English by CIEE faculty; Spanish language classes are available at multiple different levels. There are no required courses and no prerequisites to participate, although upper-level courses will require previous coursework in related topics. Students enroll in one, two, or three six-week blocks, taking two courses during each block.
This program gives students the flexibility to stay in Buenos Aires the entire time or spend other blocks at our Open Campus Block locations in Berlin, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Dublin, Kyoto, London, Madrid, Monteverde, Paris, Rome, Santiago-CL, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, and Yucatan.
Arizona State University: Enhance your international academic coursework with optional online courses that best align with your degree requirements and interests. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the CIEE academic calendar, so you can study abroad with CIEE while continuing to meet all your academic goals.
Course Information
Course Notes
- Courses are listed below by block and track; course list subject to change. Courses are in English unless otherwise noted. “GI” denotes courses that are offered at multiple CIEE locations.
- Use the Course Comparison Tools to compare classes offered across all Open Campus Block programs for each block:
- Participants staying three blocks who wish to complete a lab course will be required to opt out of one course to remain within the program credit range.
- Many CIEE courses are available in multiple CIEE locations. To ensure you can enroll in the courses you need; some courses may be facilitated as a hybrid course by an instructor from a location that is separate from your own. In a hybrid course, you will learn either face-to-face or online, depending on your location. However, regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE” – open the syllabus to see the instruction location, if known.
Hybrid Courses
Most courses are taught face-to-face and offered only for students at one location. CIEE offers some courses in a hybrid format, available to multiple program locations to increase course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. Hybrid courses can be identified in the course list as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”, and the title will include the location of instruction. Regardless of your location, you will apply what you learn from the instructor and course materials in your location. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential, and intercultural learning for all.
Academic Projects
- For Spring 2023 Academic Projects will be offered onsite (either in-person or remotely) or remotely at another Open Campus location, depending on availability and in compliance with local health and safety regulations.
- Academic Projects placement will be designed based on the student’s project learning goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements in location or within the GI Network either in-person or remotely. The process is highly individualized and goal oriented. Students enrolled in an Academic Project will receive additional academic support that informs and enhances the placement experience.
- Students applying for an Academic Project are required to submit additional materials during the course selection process.
Language Classes
- During course selection, students interested in a non-introductory Spanish language course will be instructed to take an online Spanish language assessment to determine their proficiency level. Enrollment will be finalized on site and is based on assessment outcomes.
- Students may opt into the non-credit “Survival Spanish” course during the on-site orientation.
