Qualifications

Our partners in Japan are seeking candidates who will contribute to their business and become an active member of their team. A high level of professionalism is a must. The application process is competitive and CIEE TEFL is unable to guarantee placement with our partners in Japan.

Requirements

  • Must have a masterful command of the English language.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an English-speaking country and at least 10 years of education from schools where English is the primary mode of education.
  • Currently enrolled in or completed a 150-Hour or 180-Hour CIEE TEFL Certificate course.

Positions in Japan can be with students of all ages who are looking to improve their English conversational skills. Teachers will be expected to deliver high quality instruction, and to help the business grow by sharing valuable resources to help students continue their learning journey beyond the classroom. Teachers will enjoy the benefits of a comprehensive employment package to help facilitate career growth as well as personal growth as you immerse yourself in Japanese culture.

CIEE partners with two well-respected companies in Japan that run innovative English language programs. Once you sign up, we’ll ask which of these you prefer, then we will send your application to the corresponding partner for video hiring interviews.

Positions at Partner A (National)
  • Solo, lead teaching role at private language schools
  • Locations throughout Japan, including the major cities
  • Hiring is very competitive
  • Starting monthly salary is 275,000 JPY, plus 70,000 JPY airfare allowance
Positions at Partner B (Regional)
  • Assistant Language Teacher role, to be assigned to public school classrooms
  • Operates in one of Japan’s more rural prefectures
  • Hiring is a bit less competitive
  • Driving will be required to reach teaching locations
  • Starting monthly salary is 218,000 JPY. No airfare allowance
     

Other Benefits

The cost of living in Japan is lower than in the United States and your salary should easily cover normal living expenses plus local travel in Japan. If you’re hoping to travel extensively during breaks, you should plan to bring additional funds.

In addition to salary, benefits packages include paid time off for Japanese national holidays and school vacations, as well as access to low-cost housing options, and health insurance.

Workload

Teachers work a full-time M-F schedule, spending up to 25 hours per week teaching classes, with the remaining time dedicated to lesson prep, commuting, staff meetings, and other administrative tasks.

In addition to the preparation provided by the CIEE TEFL 150-Hour Certificate Course, employers provide extensive training when you first arrive to help you learn the ropes.
