A Visit to the Parliament of Brittany in Rennes

During our visit to the Parliament of Brittany in Rennes, students discovered a place that has shaped the lives of countless people over centuries. This trip offered students a unique glimpse into one of France's most significant regional parliaments.

The Parlement de Bretagne, is a testament to the rich history of the region. Originally established in 1485, it played a crucial role in the administration of Brittany, dealing with legal and political matters until the French Revolution. The building was constructed between 1618 and 1655 and has witnessed numerous historical events.

The intricate details of the architecture, the stunning paintings, and the ornate decorations are reflective of a time when the parliament was at the heart of Breton life. Our guide explained how the parliament was a symbol of Brittany’s autonomy and identity, and how it continues to represent the region’s unique cultural heritage. Students sat in the very room where legislators once discussed and argued over laws that would impact the lives of Brittany’s citizens.

The Parliament of Brittany houses an impressive collection of art that depicts significant events and figures in Brittany’s history.  Some students were quite fascinated by the stories behind the tapestries and paintings. Each piece of art is a narrative in itself, portraying everything from historic battles to scenes of everyday life in medieval Brittany.  Our visit to the parliament was a journey into the heart of Breton history and culture.
