Top 6 Places to Explore While Studying in Japan

During my experience studying overseas in Tokyo I was exposed to an array of adventures, across Japan. Each destination I explored offered a unique blend of traditions and cultural richness that left a lasting impression on me. From bustling city streets, to temples every outing provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in Japan's history and traditional practices. Moreover I had the privilege of interacting with locals who graciously shared their narratives with me. Join me on a journey as I reflect on my time exploring Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, Kamakura, Enoshima, Kawazoe and Yokohama! 

Fukuoka & Hiroshima: A Blend of Tradition and History

My two day solo trip to Fukuoka was just perfect! I savored the best tonkotsu ramen I've ever tasted and it kickstarted an amazing culinary journey for me. Street food stalls filled the roads with delights like yakitori and taiyaki. I just had to sample everything at the lively night markets in Fukuoka, they truly showcased the city's food scene. During my time in Fukuoka city I got to explore Canal City Mall and check out the pawn shops while also enjoying the serenity of Nanzoin Temple. It truly was a trip that beautifully blended modern and traditional vibes of the city's essence. Every meal and activity I experienced in Fukuoka felt like a glimpse, into the heart and soul of the place. On my way back to Tokyo I took a ride on the Hello Kitty Shinkansen and decided to make a stop in Hiroshima for a day excursion. The sight of the Atomic Dome and Hiroshima Castle truly resonated with me highlighting Japan's strength and resilience. While visiting the Atomic Dome I had a conversation with my Uber driver, who is from Hiroshima. He shared stories about his family's past and expressed his admiration for how Hiroshima has progressed throughout the years. While driving me through the city he highlighted its commitment, to safeguarding its history and tales of perseverance, from generations. This experience not only enriched my knowledge of Hiroshima’s past but also provided insight into the struggles faced by a family during those difficult times.   

Kyoto: A Weekend Immersed in Tradition

Over the weekend in Kyoto I dove into the tapestry of Japanese culture that the city had to share with me. I especially loved joining a tea ceremony and wandering through the shrines and temples while casually biking along scenic paths. A standout moment was cruising down the river on a boat through the heart of the city. Unwinding in the peaceful atmosphere of Maruyama Park. Kyoto is indeed a haven for matcha enthusiasts offering an array of infused treats that left me craving more! 

Osaka: Shopping, Food, and Nightlife

Osaka was a destination for a weekend getaway with vibrant energy surrounding it! I spent hours wandering around Dotonbori exploring the shops before taking a boat ride to enjoy the city lights as night fell, it was absolutely captivating! To end the day on a note I savored an omakase dinner. The nightlife in Osaka was buzzing with life – neon signs illuminating the streets and music filling the air from bustling bars and clubs gave the impression that the city never sleeps! After indulging in a delightful all you can eat barbecue feast and treating myself to Tanghulu I relished every bite of Osaka's incredible culinary offerings. 

Kamakura & Enoshima: A Coastal Day Trip

Exploring Kamakura and Enoshima made for a wonderful day trip, from the city life we're used to. We kicked off our adventure by visiting the Great Buddha in Kamakura and then wandered through Nakamise Street's shops and food stalls where I indulged in local treats and bought a few keepsakes. Our next stop was Enoshima, via the Enoden Line. The beach exuded tranquility. There was an aura surrounding the island itself. It was a blend of nature's splendor and cultural immersion.

A Day in Kawagoe: Experiencing Edo Era Charm in Yukatas

CIEE arranged a day excursion to Kawago​e for us where we dressed in yukatas and leisurely wandered the streets to see the renowned Time Bell Tower, in this town showcasing traditional Edo era architecture that I related back to my Intro to Japanese Art course. 

Yokohama: A Day of Fun After Class

A quick getaway from Tokyo led me to Yokohama for a day of after class activities where I had a blast exploring the Cup Noodles Museum and designing my very own cup noodles! Following that fun experience was a lunch at the Red Brick Warehouse where I relished a wagyu burger amidst its cozy ambiance. To wrap up the day on a note I strolled through Chinatown indulging in some treats that left me completely satisfied with my day's adventures. To wrap up the day nicely​ I decided to take a spin on the ferris wheel, savoring the sights of the city​.

Looking back on my experience studying overseas in Japan made me appreciate how deeply each place enhanced my grasp of the country's culture and history. Every conversation with the locals added depth to my adventure turning sightseeing into connections. Japan's charm isn't only in its scenery and cuisine but also in its people. This journey has given me lasting memories and a longing to keep discovering the world through its cultures.
