Once upon a time in the 10th century, Copenhagen was a Viking fishing village. Fast forward a few centuries and it has become a world leader in sustainability and innovation and is today considered Europe’s Green Capital. In fact, throughout the city, you’ll find more bikes than cars, hence its nickname “Bike City.”

- As of last year, solar- and wind-energy generated 59.3% of all of Denmark’s electricity
- District heating serves 98% of households
- 90% of building waste is reused

Reason #2: You’ll discover Viking history and culture.
Denmark’s unique Viking history has shaped its culture. And it’s quite an interesting history to learn.
The first humans in Denmark were hunters and fishermen who innovatively cultivated farmland, stone tools, and weapons and eventually created comprehensive trade connections with the Roman Empire.
Vikings were known to be violent crusaders, conducting raids, and forcibly establishing settlements throughout parts of Europe. After several failed alliances and country reform, Denmark became the peaceful nation it’s known as today. Remaining neutral in both World War I and World War II, post-war Denmark built an elaborate economy and is a staunch defender of democracy and human rights. Of course, Denmark’s history is much more complicated than this brief synopsis.

“Hygge” refers to the values of Danish society: equality and the well-being of all people. It also can be interpreted to mean the practice of creating a warm atmosphere and generally enjoying life with good people. That’s why the country is well known for its accepting ambiance; the country is considered one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the world!
The concept is even evident in the city’s architecture and design, purposefully curated to feel cozy and “hyggelig.”

Study in Copenhagen Tips
After you’ve chosen a program that works best, take note of a few other tips we’ve compiled for when you study abroad in Copenhagen:
- Denmark can be expensive. While the CIEE fee covers tuition, housing, 24/7 support, and more (plus our scholarship and grant opportunities), you’ll need to make sure to have extra cash on hand for things like meals, drinks, museum fees, and gifts.
- It’s usually windy in Copenhagen. Make sure to pack warm clothing and don’t wear a hat that can easily take flight!
- Follow Copenhagen’s sustainable lead. Keep a reusable water bottle on you, walk and bike when possible, and never litter. Europe’s Green Capital is intended to stay that way!
