Summer Block 2

Intro to an Unforgettable Summer

Choosing to study abroad with CIEE Kyoto was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Leaving June 23rd and coming back August 3rd I was at the Kyoto site for 6 weeks and wished I could have stayed longer, with so many things to explore, experience and learn. The people I have meet have changed my views and have made connections that will hopefully last a lifetime. There is a ton that could be discussed about but I think something that isn’t as talked about as the quality of the classes we were taught. Overall, the courses offered an enriching blend of academic rigor and cultural exploration, and my time here has been nothing short of transformative.

A Classroom Highlight

One of the standout features of the CIEE Kyoto program is the quality and diversity of the classes offered. I had the pleasure of enrolling in "Japanese Manga and Art" and "Religion and Society" both of which provided deep insights into Japan’s cultural and societal fabric.

In "Japanese Manga and Art," we delved into the world of manga, exploring its history, artistic techniques, and cultural impact. Our teacher, Prof. Batistella, brought the subject to life with passionate lectures and engaging discussions. We had the opportunity to visit the local manga museum and explored local shops with both casual and dedicated fan products. This hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing us to appreciate the artistry and dedication involved in manga process and culture.

"Religion and Society" was equally fascinating. Taught by Prof. Salvador, The course explored the various religious traditions in Japan and their influence on contemporary society. From Shinto rituals to Buddhist philosophies, we covered a wide range of topics, one of the best things was our visit to ancient temples and shrines, where we could observe religious practices firsthand. These excursions helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, enriching our understanding of Japan's spiritual landscape.

Beyond the Classroom

CIEE Kyoto goes above and beyond to ensure that students are not just passive observers but active participants in the local culture with numerous cultural excursions and activities, from tea ceremonies and overnight classes to traditional festivals and local tours.

Kyoto, blends modernity with tradition, showing the perfect backdrop for these experiences, we would wander through the historic streets, visiting iconic sites like the Fushimi Inari Shrine, and participating in the vibrant Gion Matsuri festival were some of the highlights of my stay. Each activity offered a new perspective and deeper appreciation for Japan's rich cultural heritage.

A Life-Changing Experience

My time with CIEE Kyoto has been an unforgettable journey of learning, exploration, and personal growth, the combination of academics, immersive cultural, and a supportive community makes this program exceptional. For anyone considering studying abroad in Japan, I wholeheartedly recommend CIEE Kyoto it's an experience that will leave you with cherished memories and a profound understanding of this beautiful country.
