This summer, the village of Dikgathong came alive with the vibrant and impactful Community Health Expo, organized by the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) and the University of Botswana School of medicine team. The event, held in the heart of the village in Dikgathong primary, brought together locals, health professionals, and international and local students for a day dedicated to promoting health and wellness.

The expo featured a variety of activities designed to educate and engage the community on important health topics. From interactive workshops on nutrition and exercise to informative sessions on mental health and disease prevention, there was something for everyone. Local health practitioners and CIEE students collaborated to provide valuable insights and practical advice.

Students were tasked with different topics in two (2) groups to come up with community interventions for the village: Group 1's topic was: Emergency Health Response in Dikgathong. They came to the conclusion that the village could benefit from education on the signs of different medical emergencies as well as CPR. The health issues include in their educational curriculum were the signs of a stroke and heart attack, as well as basic steps to conduct CPR, and contact numbers for the closest medical facilities. Boitekanelo College also assisted with showing the community how to conduct basic CPR in cases of emergencies. Micure Clinic provided basic clinic screening, and Eye light optometrists provided eye screening services to the community.

One of the highlights of the expo was the free health screenings and consultations offered to attendees. Residents had the opportunity to check their blood pressure, glucose levels, and receive personalized health advice from professionals. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of regular health check-ups and early detection of potential health issues.

The event also served as a platform for cultural exchange. CIEE students shared their experiences and knowledge with the local community, fostering a sense of global connection and understanding. Music from the young primary school kids added a festive atmosphere, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Dikgathong.

The Community Health Expo was a resounding success, with many attendees expressing their gratitude for the valuable information and services provided. The event not only enhanced health awareness but also strengthened the bond between the local community and international visitors. Plans are already underway for future health initiatives, building on the momentum of this year’s expo.

In conclusion, the Community Health Expo in Dikgathong village was a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of health education. It was a day filled with learning, sharing, and celebration, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.
