The Destination
Australia is the sixth biggest country in the world and Sydney is its business hub and launching point for exchanging goods, services, and ideas with its Asian neighbors. Sydney is one of the Southern Hemisphere's leading centers for startups, trade, finance, tech, and media production. With a population of around five million, Sydney is a cosmopolitan city consistently ranked as one of the best cities to live in globally because of its social inclusion, diversity, tolerance, and healthy lifestyle.
Sydney is an incredibly diverse city and home to people from all over the world. Nearly half of its residents speak a language other than English at home and 36% were born overseas. The first inhabitants, the Aboriginals, are the world's oldest civilization, and this heritage has helped shape modern Australia. This one-of-a-kind mix of people and cultures led to a shared spirit and attitude that is the Australian way of life. Aussies are known for laid-back, "no-worries" attitudes, being open-hearted and open-minded, and believing that everyone should have equal rights and opportunities, what they call locally as having a "fair go".
Sydney is blessed with some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world; more than 80% of Australia's plants and animals are unique to our Island(s) and are found nowhere else in the world. There is also a bubbling art scene. The city government supports young and fun artistic pursuits, including Sydney's Art and About, Vivid Sydney, Sydney Movie Festival, regular food, art, crafts and music events, and the list goes on!
The CIEE Sydney Center is strategically located in the heart of Sydney's Downtown (CBD) and minutes away from Central Station, with local, intercity, and interstate transport at your doorstep.

Housing & Meals
Housing
Our housing ensures students are always well-connected to the best of the city. Set in a welcoming neighborhoods, students will enjoy a peaceful and secure living environment. Everything they need is within walking distance from their home, including various restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy, and easily accessible public transport options.
Standard Housing: Includes homestays or twin rooms inside apartments/residence halls.
- Homestays provide students with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Sydney's diverse culture. Sydney is a multicultural city, and students will stay with families from various nationalities, including Australians. These homes are located within a 45-minute to 1-hour public transport commute from CIEE. The homestay experience includes breakfast and dinner from Monday to Friday. Students will have the freedom to come and go as they please while spending quality time with their host families, gaining firsthand insight into everyday life in Sydney.
- Double occupancy rooms in shared apartments/residence halls that feature a fully equipped kitchen, shared living rooms and bathrooms, and coin-operated shared laundry facilities onsite. Students must bring their own bed sheets and towels, pillows and duvets are provided. All apartments are located within a 45-minute commute to the CIEE Center via public transportation.
Select Housing: Includes single rooms in shared apartments/residence halls within a 45-minute commute of CIEE. The single rooms will mostly be in the same apartments as the twin rooms. The apartment features a fully equipped kitchen, shared living rooms and bathrooms, and coin-operated shared laundry facilities onsite. Students must bring their own bed sheets and towels; pillows and duvets are provided. All apartments are within a 45-minute commute to CIEE via public transportation.
Select Plus Housing: Includes single rooms in shared apartments/residence halls within a 15-minute commute of the CIEE Center. The apartments/residence halls feature fully equipped kitchens, shared living rooms and bathrooms, and coin-operated shared laundry facilities onsite. Students must bring their own bed sheets and towels; pillows and duvets are provided.
A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive.
Meals
Homestays: Host families provide two meals per day.
Shared Apartments/Residence Halls: You will have shared kitchen facilities to prepare meals or purchase food and drinks at local grocers. Sydney has a vibrant food scene with fresh local fruits, vegetables, and meats readily available. You’ll find Australian food is influenced from all corners of the globe, whether it’s a walk down Spice Alley, fish and chips on the beach, or a traditional Australian pub food there is something for everyone’s tastes.
Academics
As a global intern in Sydney, you’ll work in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of innovative industries. Extracurricular excursions and cultural activities in and around Sydney complement your coursework and immerse you in the history and culture of the city.
This semester length program includes 6 weeks of academic coursework followed by a 12-week part-time internship and academic seminar. During the 6-week block of academic coursework, participants enroll in two elective Open Campus courses. In addition to the required 6-week block of courses at the start of the program, participants are also provided the option to take one additional Open Campus course during Block II and/or Block III should their schedules allow Class environment varies depending on the course and is designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards.

Course Information
- All internships are offered in English.
- Students should expect to spend up to 19-25 hours per week engaged in internship work.
- Block I courses are chosen from any of the courses offered through the Open Campus Block program in Block I. Courses are listed as “Fall Block I” and “Spring Block I” respectively.
- The optional courses for Weeks 7-18 available for Block II and Block III are listed below. Students can only add one optional course per block (Block II and Block III).
- Hybrid Courses
Some CIEE courses are offered in hybrid format to make them available at multiple program locations and increase your course choices. A hybrid class is taught synchronously in a classroom in one location, and students in the program at other CIEE locations join live online. All students have the same instructor and meet as one class. Co-curricular activities are tailored to each student’s location to promote local, experiential and intercultural learning for all. The syllabi show the location of instruction for all hybrid classes and from what program locations the course can be taken. Hybrid courses can be identified as those whose course codes end in “CIEE”.

You get more for every dollar when you study abroad with CIEE, because our high-quality programs include everything from excursions to insurance. There are no hidden charges, and no disappointing surprises when you arrive.
To help you budget, keep in mind that students are responsible for the cost of international airfare, local transportation, books and supplies, visas, and personal expenses. In addition, your college or university may charge additional fees for study abroad, or may require you to receive a transcript via CIEE's School of Record, which carries an additional fee of $500.
